Why is Key West One of America’s Best Halloween Destinations in 2026
Fort East Martello is home to Robert the Doll and at least 42 other reported spirits.
Key West has always had a strange relationship with the dead.
That may be part of why the island keeps showing up on lists of the best places in America to spend Halloween.
Travel and Tour World recently ranked Key West #9 on its Top 30 Halloween Travel Destinations in the Americas and Caribbean for 2026. The recognition follows another major mention from Travel + Leisure, which named Fort East Martello Museum one of the 10 spookiest museums in the country to visit for Halloween.
Fort East Martello is, of course, home to Robert the Doll. Robert has been part of Key West history for more than a century, and over the years his story has grown from a local legend into an international phenomenon. People now travel from around the world to see him.
But Robert is only part of the story. Key West is filled with places where history and the supernatural converge. The island has endured hurricanes, fires, shipwrecks, epidemics, war, murder, tragedy, and more than a few colorful characters who never seem quite ready to leave.
The old 1907 firehouse on Grinnell Street is now home to the Alex Vega Key West Firehouse Museum, where visitors can explore the building after dark and conduct their own paranormal investigation.
Fort East Martello is another option, where Robert still sits inside the old Civil War-era fort, and guests can return after the museum closes for a very different experience than they get during the day.
And then there is Key West itself. Walk through Old Town after dark, and you are surrounded by layers of history. Historic homes. Old hotels. Cemeteries. Churches. Bars. Buildings that have watched generations pass. It is probably no surprise that ghost stories followed.
What makes Key West different from many Halloween destinations is that its haunted history isn't created for October. The stories are here all year. Halloween simply gives the rest of the world an excuse to notice.
Add Fantasy Fest, the island’s famously eccentric October celebration, and Key West becomes a pretty hard place to beat if you like your tropical vacation with a little darkness mixed in.
Key West has always been one of America’s great haunted destinations. The secret is just getting harder to keep.
