Robert the Doll may be the most famous resident of Key West who never drew a breath.

Every year, Robert receives letters from people apologizing for mocking him, photographing him without permission, or refusing to take his legend seriously.

All of this raises an obvious question: Is it safe to visit Robert the Doll?

The answer is yes.

Robert is not waiting inside Fort East Martello to attack innocent visitors. The stories of people being “cursed” almost always involve someone behaving disrespectfully toward Robert, the spirits associated with him, or the people who care for him. Visitors who approach him with curiosity and respect generally leave with nothing more troubling than a fascinating story and perhaps a new appreciation for how little we understand about the unseen world.

From Germany to Key West

Robert was created in 1904 in Giengen, Germany, a town with a long history of toy making. He eventually came to Key West, where he became the childhood companion of artist Robert Eugene Otto.

That is the documented history. The legends surrounding Robert, however, begin much deeper in the forests of southern Germany. Some believe the doll carries traces of the ancient magic associated with Germany’s Black Forest, a place that has inspired centuries of folklore, fairy tales, superstition, and stories of forces hidden just beyond ordinary sight.

Whether that magic was intentionally placed inside Robert, absorbed during his creation, or attached itself to him later is impossible to prove. What is clear is that Robert has never behaved like an ordinary toy.

Is Robert the Doll Evil?

Robert is often described as evil, but that word is far too simple.

Most of these traditions are harmless, though asking permission from an entity before taking a photograph is not a suggested practice. Still, there is no need to memorize a long list of supernatural regulations before visiting Robert. There is really only one rule:

Be respectful.

Treat Robert as you would treat any historically important object, sacred artifact, or possible spiritual presence. Do not insult him. Do not taunt him. Do not challenge the spirits to prove themselves. Do not enter the room determined to turn the experience into a joke at someone else’s expense.

Visit with an open mind, behave with basic courtesy, and you will likely discover that Robert does not feel evil at all.

He feels magical. And Robert’s magic can be contagious.
